Question #62435 (2009-09-15)

  What was one possible reason the Europeans wanted to go to
the Indies?

Answer(s):

Thank you for your question about European exploration on Ask A Question e-reference service. AAQ is a service for Albertans, or for those with questions about Alberta. If time permits, we do assist with other questions.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, for Spain (one of the first European nations in the area) "the main interest... was mining for gold and other precious metals ... As the island gold became exhausted, the Caribbean possessions came to be valued chiefly as ports of call and trade."

European nations were also trying to find a route to the East (China/India) (the latter resulting in the term 'Indies')
