Question #62683 (2009-09-23)
hello, I am trying to find the historic name of 5A st and
19th Avenue S.W., when this area was located in
'Rouleauville'
Answer(s):
Hello and thank you for your question about the former
names of 5A Street and 19th Avenue SW.
The name of 19th Avenue SW was St. Mary Street,
according to an 1891 map we have in our collection. 5A
Street SW was not a part of Rouleauville, which ended at 4th
Street (Broadway)on the 1891 map. The parcel of land that 5A
Street would later occupy was part of the CPR lands and was
given by CPR to Western Canada College in 1903. According to
"Calgary Historical Walking Tours : Mission and Cliff
Bungalow" the college "subdivided two and a half block of
its land and named the newly created street 'University
Street'. The City of Calgary insisted on the less
picturesque name of 5A Street SW." The street does show on a
1913 map but there is no name or number attached.
I hope this information is helpful in your research.
Please don't hesitate to contact us again if we can be of
further assistance.
