Question #70997 (2010-03-11)

  what is the meaning of the word Oklahoma?

Answer(s):

Hello, and thank you for your question about the meaning of the world Oklahoma.

State Symbols USA has a brief defenition for Oklahoma here: http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/Oklahoma/Oklahomanameorigin.html

According to this source and the others I found, Oklahoma is the 46th state of the United States of America, and its name originates from the Choctaw Indian words for "red" and "people".

The Oklahoma State University Library's digital collection contains a document called "Origin of County Names in Oklahoma", which you may find interesting as well. http://digital.library.okstate.edu/chronicles/v002/v002p075.html The names in the document are listed alphabetically, with Oklahoma appearing about 3/4 of the way down the page.
