Before You Ask...

Question #71285 (2010-03-18)

  I am writing for a UK publisher and many other BC/Alta
mountains places. For Lake Louise I discovered it had been
named Laggan before that, and Holt before that. Can you tell
me where the Holt and Laggan names came from? Lake Louise I
know. Many thanks Toni Graeme

Answer(s):

Thank you for using Ask A Question! You inquired about the name origins of Lake Louise, specifically when it was called Laggan and Holt.

I only found one website mentioning place names in the Albertan Rockies. I do not know who the author is, or if the information is correct. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6c5c4/de819/

CanadianRockies.net has a forum that you could probably ask. It also has a Contact Us button (at the blue bar at the top of the screen). Maybe a tour guide knows the answers to your question. http://www.canadianrockies.net/

LakeLouise.com might also have some local knowledge on the subject. Thier website is: http://www.lakelouise.com/ or they can be phoned at 1.877.482.6555

I finally searched Library and Archives Canada ( http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html ) for any mention of Lake Louise, Laggan township or Lake Holt. I found a record for a map that may have on it some origins of place names. To get this material you will most likely have to go to your library and get help from a staff member to request this map from Archives Canada. You can see the record at this link: http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/aaweb-bin/aamain/itemdisp?sessionKey=999999999_142&l=0&d=2&v=0&lvl=1&itm=22679902

Thank you for using Ask A Question, and we hope this helps you.

We found some additional information for your question about past names for Lake Louise. AlbertaSource.ca has a explanation for the name of Laggan. You can reach the webpage at the following link:

We hope this helps you, and thank you for using Ask A Question!
