Before You Ask...

Question #74164 (2010-06-15)

Dear Ask A Question Professionals, What information can
you provide regarding post-secondary funding for Albertan
mature students? I am a mature student and resident of
Edmonton and seek funding (grants are preferable to loans)
for distance learning from a New York state universtiy. I
have already registered with studentawards.ca and
scholarships.ca, have investigated the provincial student
finance authorities and Alberta Distance Learning Centre,
but would appreciate other sources. Thank you in advance for
your expert searching on my behalf.

Answer(s):

Hello and thank you for your question about education grants.

The Reference department at the downtown branch of the Edmonton Pubic Library has a print source that we recommend you take a look at. It is a three volume work entitled:

Guide to Canadian Scholarships University/college Scholarships, Fellowships, Loans, Bursaries, Awards, Prizes, Research Grants (2009).

This item is reference only, and is available on the second floor of the Stanley A. Milner library. We recommend you visit the library to look at this source, and also tell us more about your research so far. This is a big topic and we'd be happy to help you research it further. For questions like yours, it is best if we can engage in a thorough reference interview to determine the best sources and avenues of research.

Here are some suggestions we have based on the information provided in your question. Thanks for providing a list of the agencies you have already investigated. Many of our searches also produced results relating to these agencies - eg.,Alberta Distance Learning Centre, and we have not pursued any of these to avoid duplication.

You didn't specify which university in the state of New York, so please consider the following information only an example of how you may wish to expand your search online. We suggest searching the website of the specific university you are interested in.

Below is a link to New York University's website. Some general information about scholarships and grants is provided on their site. Of particular interest is the section on "scholarships and grants from other organizations". Please note, we didn't see any specific information about students applying who reside outside the US, or are distance learners. Also, the site mentions the requirement for full-time attendance in its introduction to grants and scholarships.

Many scholarships are specific to a certain field of study. For example, Alberta Pacific Forest Industries gives scholarships to University of Alberta Students in the forestry and environment fields. We recommend searching for scholarships in the specific field of study you are pursuing.

We hope this information is helpful ,and as explained above we would be happy to help you search further if you can provide more details and we encourage you to come in to the library for further assistance.
