Hi! I am a 3rd year Anthropology major studying at the
University of British Columbia. I am interested in obtaining
any information possible on a photographic series pertaining
specifically to the Dene and Inuit peoples of the north.
These two collections are titled "Dene (or Inuit) Tradition
Life Series". They were produced by the Hudson's Bay Company
and the Department of Information in 1981. I, personally
have a copy of the Dene collection, which was given to me by
my father who believes he came into possession of it while
he was studying at NAIT, in Edmonton. As an academic, I am
currently researching the role that photography plays as a
commodification of Aboriginal culture. Once again, I would
be greatly appreciative if someone would kindly respond with
any information they may have, or perhaps provide me with
information as to where I might be able to access such
information. Thank you for your time! [name deleted]

- Question 71286 asked on 2010-03-18 13:07:23
I am researching for a UK publisher for a book called
CANADA and found much confusion about the naming of Mount
Lefroy. Would you comment on the following for me? "Mount
Lefroy 3423 m (11230 ft). In 1842/43 John Henry Lefroy
(1817-1890) was assigned from England to lead a field
expedition to the Canadian northwest to measure magnetism.
Then in 1858, James Hector, a Scottish doctor and geologist
wrote in his journal ‘On the opposite side of the valley I
saw that the Vermilion River rises from a glacier of small
size in a high valley of Mount Lefroy’. In 1863 the
Palliser expedition presented to parliament a map of the
same area that showed Mt Lefroy again. In 1884 George Mercer
Dawson, an eminent Canadian scientist and great admirer of
Lefroy was also studying the magnetic declination across
Canada. A map he made in 1886 shows Mount Lefroy correctly,
to the left of Mount Victoria. During the summer of 1901,
Whymper became the first mountaineer to visit the upper
Vermilion Valley. The striking peak which lies directly west
of Vermillion Pass was named for Edward Whymper. QUESTIONS:
Was it really known that long a time as Mount Lefroy? Who
really named it Lefroy first? And why was it changed to
Whymper? Your help will be much appreciated, Thanks Toni
