When we were children in the 1960's, why did many mothers insert coins wrapped in wax paper into the birthday cake mixture so that when we were given a slice of cake, all the children were excitedly hoping for one that had a hidden coin?

I am current participant of the Alberta Children's Services Child Care Orientation Course. This is an introductory course to early childhood education which provides individuals with a basic knowledge and understanding to begin their career working with children in child care. One of our course requirements is to conduct an interview with a child care centre director or family day home provider.
