Question 83955 asked on 2011-09-01 11:05:36

Hello, I researching the life of my great grandfather, William Roy Gullen, of Brant County, Ontario. In 1912 or 1913, he moved his family from Ontario to Alberta, by train, because he had a business opportunity on a cattle ranch located south of Calgary. I believe it was after February 24, 1913, because that was the date a son, Robert Bruce Gullen, was born. The business venture failed, and the family returned to Ontario at some point after August 1914. I am trying to verify from historical sources as much information as I can. The following is what I know from the family's accounts (a brother and a daughter). The cattle ranch was located near the Bar-U, and was owned by Gregory or some variation of the name(in old correspondence there is mention of to "Gregries"). The venture fell through after a year. One account was that my great grandfather had purchased an option which expired; the second was that he was offered the chance to manage the cattle ranch, which he did for one year until the owner died and the estate was broken up. After the ranch venture collapsed, there is an account that my greatgrandfather briefly tried to operate a dance hall in Nanton Alberta, but that venture did not work either. The family returned by train to Ontario some time after the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, although I do not know the timing, other than they were limited in what they could bring back by train because of the need to transport supplies for the war. The second question I had was whether Cockshutt Plow Company of Brantford Ontario had opened a branch office in Calgary during this period. I suspect that to be the case, because Ashton Cockshutt enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force from Calgary. Thirdly, is it possible for a resident of Ontario to obtain a library card to gain access to some of your online databases, such as the Calgary Herald? Thank you in advance for your kind consideration of these questions. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, (personal information deleted)

Question 85460 asked on 2011-11-14 13:06:40

I asked a question a couple of days ago about the obituary of James Strain who died Aug. 19, 1952 in Calgary, Alberta. You were very good to advise me of the options for finding the information, one of which was to browse the digitized "google news" of the Calgary Herald 1952 newspaper. You told me that the obituary is on page 14 of the Aug. 22, 1952 newspaper. I have tried, to no avail, to use the link you sent (and have also gone to the website directly without using the link) but I cannot view the death notices. The page comes up with other articles on top of the death notices. All that is availble to see is the word "deaths". I am wondering if something happened when you went into the article that it is now not able to be seen? At first I thought it was just not scanned properly, but then I realized that you saw it so I'm wondering if something happened?? I'm perplexed, but I do very much appreciate your assistance. How can I view the death notice? Thank you. Sincerely, [name deleted]

Good morning - I spoke to Sara yesterday - this is my question: could you please look up an obituary for Venetia TORRANCE - she was buried Mount Pleasant Cemetery Edmonton March 19th 1923 - likely died March 16th 1923. Thank you, (name removed), Oakville.

I am sorry I was apparently not specific with my earlier request. I have the information from Mount Pleasant Cemetery - the staff there say the records were destoyed in a fire, therefore I need the "obituary" from the Edmonton newspaper for Mrs. Torrance who was interred March 19th 1923, therefore likely died on or about March 16th 1923.
