Author Elizabeth Gilbert (who wrote Eat, Pray Love) has
released new non-fiction book, Committed. This book is
written in very distinctive style. Part memoir, research,
discovery, scenes, travel. As she comes to terms with her
views on marriage, you are taken along the journey with her.
She takes us on her travel aventures, her "mind" adventures,
her relationship adventures and she also comments on the
history she finds about marriage. Can you please suggest
some authors who have a similar "style" of writing, in this
non-fiction, exploratory, memoir, reflective way.

I cannot find the title 'Point Counter Point' by Aldous
Huxley at any of the branches in Calgary. I am looking for
the novel, not a study guide or essay. Is this novel really
not available from our Public Libraries? If it is available
(because I find it hard to believe that it would not be),
then the search form from within my account is not
displaying it in the results list. I used both the title
search and the author search, and I tried all of the
different types of searches that are offered. I am not new
to search engines so I do hope that you have some tips for
me if the title is available because no matter how many
times I searched, I could not find it. Thank you for your
time. (personal information deleted)

I heard quotes from W. O. Mitchell during the Winter
Olympics Opening Ceremonies last night. Part of a phrase
that caught my attention was "...the great prairie harp of
telephone wires...discovered I was mortal." Unless someone
there has his works memorized, I know this is tricky, but is
it likely that this came from his novel, Who Has Seen the
Wind? No hurry whatsoever. Just curious and hoping to read
some of his work. I am in Iowa in the States, but your intro
here says "asking questions about Alberta, Canada," so I
figure I'm safe to ask. Thank you very much.

About 10 yrs ago, I read a series of mystery novels from
the Yellowknife library. The setting was England in a small
town during modern times. A middle aged woman recently
widowed was a reluctant sleuth. I believe her deceased
husband was a priest. She had a grown married daughter who
was constantly trying to get money or posessions from her.
At first the mother gave in. Over the course of the stories
the mother started to develop some backbone. I've tried over
the years to find the author's name with no luck? Does
anyone this series of books?

I would like to find recommendations of fiction books by
women authors; google is not very helpful. I like to
consider myself reasonably well-read, but this is not the
case with women authors. I would greatly appreciate any
guidance or direction. I have read the highest percentage
women authors from France (about a third) but do not read
any languages but English, so they have been only in
translation. I have read the highest percentage women
authors in genre of Science Fiction (US= 48), the least in
genre of Crime (US= 0). If there is a syllabus online,
please indicate where. If there are personal
recommendations, please feel free to mention.

I'm looking for help help finding the title of an English
mystery in which the hero is almost killed by an interaction
between alcohol and mushrooms. I think it's a novel but it
could be a short story, and I'm pretty sure it's from the
1930s. Dorothy Sayers or Margery Allingham seems likely. The
hero is plied with alcohol enthusiastically by a "friend,"
who then takes him to a very fancy restaurant, where the
waiter discreetly asks if they have made proper
preparations. The hero innocently (practically cross-eyed
drunk at this point) says yes, having no idea what the guy
is talking about, and they are given a special pre-ordered
(by the "friend") dish of some mushrooms that have to be
eaten after a day or two of no alcohol. He doesn't die, but
it's close. I can't remember how the main plot went - I
think this was a side-attempt to get the hero out of the way
when he was coming too close to the truth. This is driving
me nuts! I've Googled like crazy, and my Google-fu is
usually strong, but no luck so far. Thanks!
