On the topic of maternity leave, is there any information
(law, pamphlet, website, current book [last 2 years]) about
volunteering or working while on maternity leave? We both
work for the same employer. One position is a on-site
managerial position, which I am the sole contracted employee
for. My wife is a general employee. Our employer says that,
while on maternity leave, my wife cannot "appear" to be
volunteering or working while on mat. leave. The research I
have done involved visiting the Government of Alberta
website and looking through any/all materials on maternity
leave. I found nothing to support or discredit our employers
statement. I would appreciate any resources, though I am
specifically hoping for something that exists on the
Internet or in print that will confirm a yes or no as to my
wife's volunteering/working.

I rent my condo and received a letter from the condo board
requesting an extra $250.00 as a "Special Assessment" as of
June. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the renter has not
been paying regularly, money is tight. Today I recieved
another letter saying that if I didn't pay in 10 days they
would add an extra $50.00 fee. Is this not illegal? That's a
25% interest and would be considered loansharking! This is
over and above condo fees they keep increasing yearly even
though the economy has taken a dive and they have not
improved any services, making it impossible to try to sell!
They have also left disrepair for over 6 months due to
flooding from the apt. above and have done nothing to fix
it!I feel like I have no rights! It's worse than renting!

Hello! I am trying to find out who would have been allowed
to bring a case to court (common law or tort) in Alberta
around 1910. Were only adult men allowed to initiate a court
action? Men and widows? Men and widows and single women?
Could married women bring a case to court? Could children?
Or would married women and children considered dependent and
therefore unable to bring a case to court? thanks very much!
Also thanks for the fatality information you sent earlier.

I am trying to find out how to go about reprinting a poem
from a book called The Poetry of the Canadian People
1900-1950, edited by N. Brian Davis. The poem is called "The
Millwright's Lament" and is annotated as "Anonymous. The
United Worker, Ocean Falls, B.C., December 7, 1948." The
copyright for the book says "1978 N. Brian Davis" and
indicates that no part of the publication can be reproduced
without the prior written permission of NC Press Limited.
However, it appears that NC Press is no longer in business.
I am not sure how copyright applies for a anonymous work
published in a book where the publisher is no longer
operating. I am looking into the possibility of publishing
the poem in a trade magazine. Thanks!

Answer (posted 2010-01-29 14:40:56) Hello and thank you for
your question about whether or not the designation QC
changes to KC when the reigning monarch changes from a
female to a male. We spoke to staff at the both the
Provincial Court of Appeal and the Lieutenant Governor's
office about this question and staff were unable to provide
a definitive answer. The Canadian Encyclopedia online states
that the use of the terms QC or KC is determined by the
gender of the current sovereign. No mention is made of
changing the title when the monarchy passes from one gender
to another. Here is a link to the article.
http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0006610
We located an example of the designation changing from KC to
QC in apparent accordance to a change in the monarchy. Here
is a list of the Styles and Honours of Reginald
Manningham-Buller, 1st Viscount Dilhorne. We noted that KC
changes to QC at the time Queen Elizabeth was crowned.

AM MST (CA) Subject: RE: When QC changes
to KC Dear Mr (name removed), Your question regarding the status of
the title Queen's Counsel when the monarch is a King has
been passed to me as the Ministry of Justice official
responsible for QC policy. It is convention that upon a King
taking to the throne the title QC will automatically become
one of Kings Counsel (KC) both for those currently appointed
QC and for future appointees. I hope this answers your
query. Kind regards (name removed) Policy Adviser: Queen's

I have a reference question that you may be able to help
me with. A library patron is looking for a book about
Canada… not the tourist type of book but more about, as he
says, “how Canada is better than the United States”
which, knowing this fellow as I do, means “more
politically ‘left’ than the US.” He is a Quaker and
greatly admired Canada for “taking in the draft
resisters” in the Viet Nam era. He is worried about the
apparent “rightward” drift but still thinks Canada is a
“better place.” I'm writing from the Princeton Public
Library in Princeton NJ, USA but my parents live in Calgary.
Thank you.
